From Regional Victories to a Global Stage

Just two weeks ago, hundreds of students from around the world participated in MECC Regionals, competing across four different types of Excel Esports cases. Seven events produced seven regional champions, each earning their place in something bigger: the Online Regional Winners’ Battle. Now, those champions face off against one another to determine who truly stands above the rest.

The stakes could not be higher. Beyond the prestige of being crowned the ultimate winner, the champion will secure a guaranteed spot in the MECC European Open Finals, along with paid travel and hotel accommodations to attend the event in person.

Meet the Competitors

The Online Regional Winners’ Battle brings together seven exceptional players, each representing the very best from their respective regional events.

Each competitor arrives with a unique playing style, strategy, and story—making this showdown not just a competition, but a clash of diverse approaches to Excel Esports mastery.

The Case and the Hosts

This year’s case was created by MECC Faculty Fellow and avid Excel Esports competitor Fritz Burkhardt. The scenario draws inspiration from an unconventional sport – Frisbee – blending real-world dynamics with analytical problem-solving.

Both Excel Esports and Frisbee have even been featured in ESPN’s “Ocho” programming, which highlights emerging and unconventional sports.

The live-streamed event was hosted by MECC Founder David Brown alongside MECC Individual Champion 2024 Benjamin Weber, bringing expert insight and energy to the broadcast.

The Game

Points trickled onto the leaderboard slowly, the top positions changed almost every minute, and until the very end it was unclear who would come out on top. The bonus questions played a big role here because only the first four players solving each question could earn the points.

The first at the top of the leaderboard was Paul, followed by Luke, who both solved BQ1, earning 30 points. Just a few seconds later, they were overtaken by Christiaan, who solved Level 1 and earned 100 points. Then Jackson joined the scores with his BQ1 solve, and Joy with her Level 1 solve jumped up to second place. James and Jacob focused on setting up their solutions and got their first scores after more than five minutes of gameplay.

Every player had their time at the top of the leaderboard. The scores were so close that every answer mattered. Less than three minutes before the end, Jacob was leading strongly until Luke finally solved Level 5 and went ahead. For him, BQ1 was the deciding factor that allowed him to take the victory, as Jacob was not among the four players who earned points for it.

The Winner

After an intense and closely fought competition, Luke Peyton ultimately rose above the rest to claim victory. Demonstrating exceptional consistency, precision, and composure under pressure, he secured the title of Online Regional Winners’ Battle Champion. His performance not only earned him recognition among peers but also the coveted prize: a guaranteed place in the MECC European Open Finals, along with full travel and accommodation support. See you in Amsterdam!
