MECC FEBRUARY 2024 ROAD TO LAS VEGAS CHALLENGE

Here is a comprehensive walkthrough guide for the MECC February 2024 Road To Las Vegas Challenge provided by one of our faculty fellows, Diarmuid Early, as well as as three-time Microsoft Excel World Champion, Andrew Ngai, and Lorenzo Foti. The case is available in your ExPrep account. Try it yourself, and if you get stuck, look for the solution in the videos. You can also watch how this case was played during live battle.

TASK

Somehow you got a job as a sommelier, a well trained and extremely knowledgeable wine professional, at the most popular spreadsheet themed wine bar in the world, the Excellar Wine Bar! Sadly, you know nothing about wine but are very good with Excel. To assist in your new job, you have created a list of the most frequent customers and their desired wine attributes (found on the “Customers” tab) as well as the most popular wines and their attributes (found on the “Wines” tab).

You will need to combine your Excel skills with these two lists to properly pair customers with the best wine so that you don’t get fired and can keep your job!

Level 1 will get you familiar with the wine attribute information.
Level 2 will support your approach and understanding for Level 3. If you get stuck on Level 3, move on to Level 4 as there is only one customer/wine pairing to consider in Level 4.
Level 4 will support your approach and understanding for Level 5. If you get stuck on Level 5, move on to Level 6 as there is only one customer/wine pairing to consider in Level 6.
Level 6 will support your approach and understanding for Level 7.
Level 8 is standalone and is the only Level which uses the wine price information (column G of the “Wines” tab).

WALKTHROUGH VIDEO PROVIDED BY DIARMUID EARLY

This video was recorded when Diarmuid competed this case as part of the Road to Las Vegas battle.

Note that he used some pre-written macros and LAMBDAs, as well as some pretty advanced techniques… so this won’t be easiest solve to follow.

He wrote a few simple LAMBDAs in the time between getting access to the video and needing to start the case.

Those were:

  • cust (given a customer, returns either all their attributes, or the given attribute (optional second argument): =LAMBDA(cust,[att],INDEX(catt,XMATCH(cust,cNm),IF(ISOMITTED(att),SEQUENCE(,COLUMNS(attNm)),XMATCH(att, attNm))))
  • wine (basically the same, but for wines instead of customers): =LAMBDA(wine,[att],INDEX(watt,XMATCH(wine,wNm),IF(ISOMITTED(att),SEQUENCE(,COLUMNS(attNm)),XMATCH(att, attNm))))
  • winePr (return the prices of a given range of wines – he didn’t end up using this one) =LAMBDA(wine,XLOOKUP(wine,wNm,wpr))

These relied on creating a few named ranges: cNm / wNm / attNm for the names of the customers / wines / attributes, catt / watt for the grids of customer and wine attributes, and wpr for the wine price.

WALKTHROUGH VIDEO PROVIDED BY JULIAN POELTL

Video is divided in parts, so it is easier to go through levels.

WALKTHROUGH VIDEO PROVIDED BY ANDREW NGAI

Andrew attempted this after the actual battle, and while he tried to do it under “live” conditions, he couldn’t avoid seeing some information via social media.

WALKTHROUGH VIDEO PROVIDED BY LORENZO FOTI

LIVE BATTLE WITH FOUR PARTICIPANTS

The same case was featured in MEWC Road to Las Vegas 2024 Battle II. Here is a recording of live battle where four participants were working on solving this case:

  • Sergio Trifletti (Italy)
  • Katelyn Stenen (USA)
  • Jason Webber (South Africa)
  • Anders Richter Lindén (Denmark)

The game was hosted by Patrick Chatain and Jordan Goldmeier.
