Jaden Amatuzzo: From =SUM to Competing on a Global Scale

introduction:

Sometimes an MECC journey begins with a classmate mentioning something almost in passing, a livestream watched out of pure curiosity, and a moment of realization that changes everything.

Jaden Amatuzzo’s journey into Student Excel Esports started with a single conversation and a single stream. By the end of that stream, he had already made his decision to sign up. What followed was a journey that took a student who had never used Excel beyond =SUM to competing on a global scale against the best Excel players around the world.

one conversation, one stream, one decision

Jaden first heard about MECC from a classmate who was involved in his university’s MECC club. The reaction was immediate and genuine.

“I was honestly shocked to learn that not only did Excel Esports exist, but that the finals were held in a real Esports arena in Las Vegas.”

But what turned curiosity into commitment was what happened next. As it turned out, there was a livestreamed battle featuring a professor from his own university the very next day. Jaden tuned in out of curiosity and ended up watching the entire event.

“I was surprised by how entertaining I found it, and by the end of the stream I had resolved to give MECC a try.”

It is an honest and relatable MECC origin story in the community. No grand plan. No career strategy. Just genuine curiosity, one livestream, and a decision made before the credits rolled.

starting from scratch

If there is one thing Jaden’s story proves beyond any doubt, it is that you do not need Excel experience to start your MECC journey. When Jaden signed up, his Excel knowledge was about as minimal as it gets.

“I had practically no experience with Excel before joining MECC. I had only used Excel a handful of times before, and the extent of my function knowledge was =SUM.”

That is it. One function. And yet within weeks he was competing in his first MECC competition. His story is perhaps the most compelling possible response to any student who has ever thought they are not ready to sign up and give MECC a shot.

the first competition and a humbling lesson

Jaden’s first MECC competition came just one week after he signed up. He had discovered that he genuinely enjoyed Excel Esports and had completed a few practice cases, so he went into the September Weekend Battle feeling cautiously optimistic.

“It suffices to say that things didn’t quite go as planned.”

A combination of time pressure, reading comprehension mistakes, and his overall lack of experience meant he finished only a fraction of the case. But it was what he saw in the results that really put things into perspective.

“When the results were released, I was amazed to discover that not only had the first-place competitor completed the entire case, but they had done so with thirteen minutes still remaining on the clock.”

It was humbling. But rather than discouraging him, it showed him what was possible and gave him something to work toward.

The  – means the student competed in both levels and scored above the Varsity median, so their Junior Varsity result is not shown.

how jaden prepares and what makes a difference

As Jaden has grown as a competitor, his preparation has become more intentional and more technical.

“In the days leading up to a competition I usually intensify my practice. I’ll work through both new and old cases, paying close attention to the areas where I struggle or lose the most time.”

But what sets Jaden’s approach apart is what he does alongside that case work. With input from his teammates, he develops custom LAMBDA functions to automate repetitive tasks, turning hours of preparation into a competitive edge when the timer starts.

It is a long way from =SUM.

the most memorable moment

When we asked Jaden about his most memorable MECC moment, he gives a refreshingly honest answer.

“It’s not my proudest moment, but my most memorable experience was during the April Team e-Invitational.”

His team had completed every part of the case except for the final bonus question. Jaden had made a mistake in his model and was trying to debug it while the clock ticked down. With less than ten seconds remaining, his teammates started guessing possible answers.

They guessed correctly.

“We managed to fully solve the case in time.”

It is exactly the kind of moment that only happens in live competition. The kind that makes MECC something no classroom exercise could ever replicate.

what mecc changed & what it gave him

Before MECC, Jaden assumed Excel was a tool for simple spreadsheets and routine office work. What he found inside MECC completely rewired that assumption.

“Modern Excel includes features like dynamic arrays, LAMBDA functions, and functional programming concepts that make it capable of solving complex problems. In many ways, Excel has evolved into a fully fledged programming language, just with a spreadsheet as the user interface.”

And when it comes to what MECC gives students that they cannot find anywhere else, Jaden is clear. “MECC has given me the unique opportunity to develop a genuinely useful technical skill through fun competition. At least as far as Esports go, I think Excel Esports are the most valuable in terms of the skills you gain.”

His message to any student sitting on the fence is as direct as it gets.

“Just sign up. It’s free, it only takes a few minutes, and there’s no obligation to compete if you decide it’s not for you. You don’t need to be an Excel expert before joining MECC. Rather, you become an expert by solving cases, learning from mistakes, and challenging yourself.”

Jaden started with one function and one livestream. Where his MECC journey takes him next is still being written. And with the MECC Championships in Las Vegas on the horizon, the next chapter could be the biggest one yet.
