Presented by Equity Methods
In today’s workplace, Excel is rarely used in isolation. From financial modeling and data analysis to reporting and decision-making, it’s part of a collaborative process where people contribute, review, and build on each other’s work.
This collaborative spirit defined the MECC Teams Championships 2025. As one of the key contributors, Equity Methods helped make the event possible, so teams from around the world could gather in Las Vegas to compete in an environment, where collaboration is key to performance. We talked with teams from the University of Technology Sydney, University of Arizona, and INSCAE to learn how they tackle high-pressure problems together.

Take a look at how top teams approached the challenges under pressure, where every second counts.
Take a look at how top teams approached the challenges—from adapting their strategies in real time to maintaining clear communication under pressure, where every second counts.
Each team had its own path to forming. In most cases, teams weren’t long-standing units from the start. Many meet for the first time during competitions or in business school programs. They succeed because they focus on adaptability. They have to quickly learn how to work together, understand each other’s thinking styles, and build coordination in a relatively short amount of time.
Roles within teams are generally assigned based on each member’s strengths, aligning tasks with what each person does best. However, these roles are not rigid. If someone encounters difficulty or needs support, others step in to assist or take over specific tasks. This shared responsibility helps ensure that progress continues smoothly and that no single point of failure slows the team down. It also allows team members to stay aware of the overall structure of the solution, rather than working in isolation.
Teams communicate not only at the start when assigning tasks, but also throughout the process as they discuss ideas, explain their thinking, and update each other while working. This ongoing communication helps everyone stay aligned and reduces misunderstandings.
Speaking thoughts out loud also supports problem-solving. By explaining their approach, team members can spot gaps in logic, improve their thinking, and catch mistakes earlier. In this way, effective communication supports coordination and leads to better results.
In a competitive environment, a fixed plan is rarely enough. While teams may develop a general strategy after briefly reviewing the case overview, that plan often evolves once the full case is revealed.
As soon as a challenge begins, the most effective teams move into an adaptable approach. They quickly divide the workload based on the needs of the case, then adjust their focus as new information or technical challenges appear. Throughout the process, they keep communication open to stay aligned, which helps them maintain steady progress.
When comparing individual work to teamwork, students consistently pointed out the added value of collaboration.
Working alone can be straightforward, but working in a team introduces multiple perspectives. This allows ideas to be discussed, challenged, and improved collectively. Teams can make progress more efficiently by combining their knowledge and dividing responsibilities. At the same time, teamwork requires additional skills, particularly in communication and understanding how others approach problems. Successfully navigating these dynamics is what enables teams to perform well together.
Students shared a few consistent pieces of advice for those starting out:
A common message across all teams was that teamwork improves with practice. The more experience a group gains working together, the more natural coordination and communication become. Teams also emphasized the value of understanding each other’s working styles, as this makes it easier to anticipate actions, reduce friction, and collaborate more smoothly during time-sensitive challenges.
The MECC Teams Championships 2025 highlighted that success is not only about technical ability, but also about how effectively a team can operate together. From dividing roles and maintaining communication to adapting strategies on the fly, teamwork plays a central role in how problems are approached and solved. For students who want to see these dynamics in action and understand how teams performed throughout the competition, you can watch the full MECC Teams Championship 2025 recap.
Excel may often be associated with individual work, but in real-world scenarios — and especially in competitive environments — it functions within a collaborative framework. In that sense, Excel reflects the workplace itself: a tool used not in isolation, but as part of a team effort where collaboration, clarity, and shared understanding make the difference.
