Here is a comprehensive walkthrough guide for the MECC 2022 Individual Finals – Volleyball provided by one of our faculty fellows, David Brown. The case is available in your ExPrep account. Try it yourself, and if you get stuck, look for the solution in the videos. You can watch how it went down during the live finals.

TASK
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. In this case we will analyze scoring statistics of fictious volleyball matches played by the team of University of Arizona.
Scoring
Modern volleyball matches get scored according to “rally scoring” rules: the team that wins the rally is awarded a point and serves the ball to start the next rally. This is a fairly simple system and it will be used for questions on Levels 1-4.
However, up until 1999, the so-called “side-out scoring” was used: only the serving term can earn a point. If the serving team loses the rally, a side-out occurs and the other team serves next, but no points are awarded. This system was dropped as the length of volleyball games was too unpredictable for the TV format. This scoring format is used for Level 5.
A few things to note:
– To win a set, a team must have at least two more points that their opponents (regardless of the scoring system).
– To win a match in this case, a team must win two-out-of-three sets (in NCAA play, matches are best three-out-of-five sets).
– In this game task, under both scoring rules the final set in a match is to 15 points, and earlier sets are to 25 points.
