TASK
A census has been conducted of all the citizens living in FMWCLand in order to find out more about where they live, how high their income is and for how long they live.
Cities Tab (All Levels)
The cities tab lists the 420 cities surveyed and the 50 states in which they are situated. These states consist of ExcelState and 49 other states which are eerily similar to those in America. Each row of the table is an entry for one city and the following information is given:
City: The name of the city.
State: The name of the state in which the city is located.
Population: The number of people living in the city.
Number of Households: The number of households in the city. Multiple people can live in one household.
Average household income: The average income per household in the city. The average income per capita (per person) will typically be smaller than this.
Life Expectancy at Birth: Average life expectancy in the city, at birth.
Life Expectancy at 21: Average life expectancy in the city, at age 21.
Life Expectancy at 60: Average life expectancy in the city, at age 60.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that the household income is per household, and the life expectancy is per person. How would you convert per household values to per-person values?
Map of ExcelState (Levels 5-7)
The Map of ExcelState tab contains the map of ExcelState. Each one of the 133 cities in ExcelState is plotted on this map. For the purpose of Level 5, each cell represents a distance of 1000 metres.
Note: The colouring for land and water is only used in Bonus Question 5.
Distance calculation (Levels 5 and 7)
Pythagoras’ Theorem (distance^2 = (rows crossed)^2 + (columns crossed)^2) is used in Levels 5 and 7. We assume that if we move up, down, left or right 1 cell, we travel 1 cell (1000 metres in Level 5). By the same principle, if we move 1 cell diagonally we move SQRT(2) units (roughly 1414 metres in Level 5). When we say ‘within x units’, we mean less than or equal to x units away.

LIVE BATTLE WITH FOUR PARTICIPANTS
The same case was featured in MEWC Road to Las Vegas 2024 Battle IX. Here is a recording of live battle where four participants were working on solving this case:
- Fritz Burkhardt (Norwich University)
- Carolyn Hamilton (Utah Valley University)
- Eric Kelley (University of Tennessee Knoxville)
- Chris McNeil (Appalachian State University)
The game was hosted by David Brown and Jon Acampora.
