MECC Finals 2024: A Strong Finish to a Year of Global Growth
2024 was a year of major growth for MECC. Over 8,000 students from more than 800 schools in 110+ countries participated in our challenges, and our community continues to expand with the support of 250+ college ambassadors worldwide. The culmination of this year’s effort took place at the MECC Finals — a high-energy conclusion to an increasingly global and competitive season.
A Truly International Gathering
This year’s MECC Finals welcomed over 100 students from 13 countries. The event was part of The Active Cell, a three-day Excel-focused gathering that also included the Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC). The combined structure brought together competitors, learners, professionals, and Excel enthusiasts from around the globe.
A Closer Look at the MECC Finals
Day 1: Setting the Stage
The event began with a series of expert-led lectures featuring Andrew Ngai, Klinsmann Langhanz, Giles Male, Diarmuid Early, and Oz du Soleil — a mix of technical depth and industry perspective that set the tone for the days to come.
In the evening, the Last Chance Qualification Round (LCQR) gave students a final opportunity to earn a place in the MECC Semi-finals. This round was open to players still hoping to advance further in both MECC and MEWC competitions. For many, this was the last chance to break into the upper tier of competition.
Day 2: The Semi-Finals and Intense Competition
The Active Cell: Morning Masterclasses
The day started with a fresh round of masterclasses from Excel experts including Owen Price, Ian Schnoor, Jake Armstrong, David Fortin, and Josh Aharonoff. These sessions offered both practical tips and strategic insights, bridging real-world applications with competitive techniques.
MECC Semi-finals
Later in the day, MECC took the spotlight with both team and individual semi-finals.
In the Team Semi-finals, 14 teams competed for one of four spots in the finals.
The Individual Semi-finals featured 64 participants: 45 pre-qualified players, 15 from the LCQR, and 4 wildcards.
It was a highly competitive round, showcasing the depth of talent in this year’s field.
MEWC Game Day
Closing out the day, the MEWC competition began with its first official round. 17 MECC students were also part of the MEWC lineup, representing our community on the world stage and competing alongside profesionals.
Day 3: The Grand Finale
The Active Cell: Final Lectures
Morning lectures featured Danielle Stein Fairhurst, Enrique Ruiz, Melissa de Korte, and Finance Bro — a fitting mix of professional insight and energy to inspire participants ahead of the final matches.
MECC Finals: Teams & Individuals
The Team Finals brought together the top four squads. Unfortunately, technical issues impacted the match and scoring adjustments were made to the bonus rounds to level the playing field.
Despite these disruptions, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville emerged as 2024’s Team Champions. Given the close scores and competitive nature of the match, we’ll be inviting all finalists back for a special rematch event in 2025 — Teams Showdown.
The Individual Finals featured an elimination-style game designed by MECC founder David Brown. The top 12 competitors faced off, beginning with a lightning round that unlocked the full gameboard. Players were then eliminated every 5 minutes until just six remained to fight for the title. Congratulations to Benjamin Weber, who claimed the championship after an intense final round.
MEWC Finals
The event closed with the MEWC Semi-Finals and Finals — a professional-level showdown. Our MECC Champion competed at the highest level and, after a fierce battle, was narrowly eliminated in the semi-finals. His performance demonstrated just how competitive the MECC cohort has become on the global stage.
